Local MP, John Thurso, has warmly welcomed an investment of £50,000 by EWS to strengthen the track of the Far North Line between Georgemas and Thurso and news of oil deliveries to Lairg which BP will start to run next month.
The MP said:
"This is very good news for the area.
Decommissioning work at Dounreay coupled with developments at Scrabster Harbour means that there is now very considerable opportunity for rail freight in Caithness. The strengthening of the bridge and track into Thurso provides the green light for the development of a freight handling yard in Thurso.
The imminent running of oil deliveries to Lairg has again highlighted the importance of and strengthened the case for retaining a rail link into Central Sutherland.
These are very welcome measures which not only provide the opportunity to remove substantial heavy traffic from our roads but also help strengthen the future of the Far North Line. We have this week seen the introduction of a Sunday service between Wick and Inverness under the winter timetable as the Highland Rail Partnership begins work on cutting journey time at a number of locations along the route."
