Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MP, John Thurso, has warmly welcomed the recommendation of the Maternity Services Advisory Group that Caithness retain its consultant led maternity unit at the Caithness General Hospital. Commenting on the publication today, 3rd August, of the Highland Maternity Services Review, he said:
I warmly welcome the MSAG report and its conclusions. The threat to the consultant-led maternity services in Wick caused great public anxiety and I am delighted that MSAG has recognised the widespread demand for this much valued service and recommended that the Obstetrics service in Caithness should be maintained.
I believe the phrase "in line with the clearly expressed will of the people of Caithness" not only recognises the strength and unity of opinion locally but also establishes an important precedent for future consultations.
The report also draws attention to the possible effects of new Royal College guidelines in the future and that practice must modernise and new styles of working based on multi-disciplinary partnerships should be developed.
I particularly welcome the recommendation that health authorities in the Highlands should seek to influence any emerging Royal College or other national guidelines being produced on maternity care to ensure that our experience of rural maternity provision is fully understood and considered.
The recognition that there are particular problems in the delivery of health care in remote areas which require different solutions is a considerable step forward."
