John Thurso, MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, commenting on the Government's announcement today about the future management of nuclear fuels at Dounreay, said:
"The decision is welcome since it at least removes the uncertainty which has prevented Dounreay from planning the future of D1206.
I welcome the statement that this decision will have no impact on jobs. The opportunity now exists for Dounreay to become a world centre of excellence in decommissioning skills. In this regard, I have spoken to John McKeown, Chief Executive of the UKAEA, who has assured me that as much work as possible will be given to local firms. This is clearly vital if we are to maintain these skills in the area and retain the benefits locally.
I hope that this will now allow Dounreay to complete its plans for the future speedily, and I welcome the commitment given to full and genuine local consultation for all elements of the Dounreay Restoration Plan."
