Local MP John Thurso has expressed regret at the announcement today that 98 jobs at the Thurso Call Centre will be transferred to Bury in September in a move by O2 to centralise its national operations at a single extended site.
The MP said:
"Any job loss in our community is always very regrettable. The area was taking on a new confidence in the wake of the decommissioning contracts coming through and new offices opening up, and this is a disappointing setback.
With over 600 currently employed at the Thurso Call Centre, the facility is now a significant employer within the local economy, and I very much welcome the assurance which BT and Manpower have given to work together to bring new jobs to the site."
John Thurso has again underlined the need for joint action on the part of both Government and the private sector to speed up the delivery of broadband to the North. He said:
"Broadband technology is essential if the area is to safeguard existing jobs and promote new employment potential within the communications industry. This should be an early warning sign to Government that failure to invest in the necessary infrastructure will put jobs at risk. We cannot afford to be left behind and I shall maintain all possible pressure upon the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry."
