Local MP John Thurso has received confirmation of additional measures which BEAR Scotland has put in place to supplement its winter maintenance programme this year. The details follow a meeting the MP had with the Company and officials of the Scottish Executive.
John Thurso said:
"I was pleased to learn from BEAR that they recognise there were lessons to be learned from the shortcomings last year and that in consequence they have revised and improved their plans for this year.
I particularly welcome the prospect of a closer working relationship with the Council and hope this will deliver speedier and more effective maintenance on both the trunk and side roads.
I spend a good deal of time on the road at week-ends and will certainly know if there are further problems. I shall be monitoring the situation very carefully."
The MP also raised at the meeting the surface water drainage problem in South Road, Wick and received details of a scheme to avert the flooding which is shortly to be submitted to the Scottish Executive for approval.
John Thurso said:
"The area has been very badly affected by flooding in the past and I am glad that remedial work is imminent. Subject to a CCTV inspection next week, I understand the Company are keen to get the work underway before Christmas."
