At Scottish Questions today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Scottish Secretary, John Thurso MP, stung Helen Liddell when he criticised DEFRA's failure to pursue agrimoney compensation, despite repeated requests to do so from Scottish Ministers and demanded an assurance that in future negotiations the views of Scottish Ministers would be properly considered. He asked:
"Is she aware that many Scottish farmers were deeply disappointed by the failure of DEFRA to pursue agrimoney compensation despite repeated requests from the Scottish Rural Affairs Minister to do so?
Will she therefore ensure that in the negotiations likely to be consequent on Commissioner Fischler's interim report, the representations of Scottish Ministers will not be dismissed in the same cavalier way?"
Commenting after Scottish Questions, John Thurso said:
"Agriculture represents a much larger proportion of GDP in Scotland than in England. It is vital therefore that the views of Scottish farmers as expressed by Scottish Ministers be heard in London. That is the role of the Secretary of State, and I call on her to play it rather than attempting cheap shots."
