MP Seeks Backing for Rural Post Offices

December 18, 2002 12:00 AM

Far North MP, John Thurso today led a delegation of Scottish Liberal Democrat MPs to meet David Mills, Chief Executive of the Post Office and other senior executives, to discuss the future of the rural Post Office network. He had requested a meeting to seek assurance that rural Post Offices would continue to be supported and to express concern at the threat of closures following withdrawal of pension payments.

Commenting after the meeting, John Thurso said:

"The Post Office made it clear that they have no option but to find most of their business from outside Government sources.

It is extremely disappointing that Government departments continue to fail to give adequate support to the Post Office network.

Transitional social network payments may maintain the network over the next 2 or 3 years but the Government should be in doubt that there remains a real threat to the Post Office network if additional business is not found. This is a considerable challenge for the Post Office Executive.

Together with my colleagues, we were able to raise a number of issues including the possibility of widening the number of branches which can provide driving licence and passport forms. Clearly the more services the Post Offices can offer on behalf of Government Agencies, the more viable they become."

The meeting was attended by John Thurso MP, Malcolm Bruce MP, Alan Reid MP, Michael Moore MP and Sir Robert Smith MP.

If you are a resident of the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
