Local MP, John Thurso, has challenged the Government to disassociate itself from public comments made by Sir John Marsh, Chairman of the Independent Review Group on Veterinary Medicines, suggesting that stock rearing was economically unjustifiable in remote areas such as the Highlands and Islands.
Speaking after an exchange in the Commons with Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Minister, Elliot Morley, the MP said:
"These comments, coming from a senior Government advisor, charged with reviewing the dispensing of medicines by vets, caused immense unease among the North Highland farming community where stock rearing is crucial to the economic and social well-being of so many of our more remote areas.
I am delighted to have the Minister's assurance that the comments made by Sir John do not reflect Government thinking and that it remains fully committed to supporting the production of livestock on the hills and uplands."
