Local MP John Thurso has again raised the possibility of the MOD offering some financial compensation to the communities around the Tain Air Weapons Range in recognition of the disturbance they experience on a near-daily basis. Speaking during a debate on Defence Policy in Scotland, the MP told the Commons that those living in the Tain area "fully understand the need for such ranges, and there is no question of their asking for them to be taken away".
However, addressing Adam Ingram, MP, the Minister of State for Defence, John Thurso said:
"I ask the Minister to accept that in this modern day the relationship between the forces that use such facilities and the civilians who live there is crucial. Perhaps as part of the current Defence Review he might consider how best that relationship can best be taken forward and what financial compensation could be given, perhaps to community councils, in such areas for what they put up with".
Commenting after the debate, the MP said:
"The Tain community has served the training needs of our military aircraft crew very well and i believe it would be appropriate if that contribution were now to be formally recognised through some kind of financial contribution - either in the form of a "community fund" held by the local community councils - or, as has been suggested by others, a percentage council tax relief paid directly to the local authority in respect of the affected properties".
