Local MP John Thurso today welcomed the decision by Lewis Macdonald, MSP, Deputy Minister for Transport at the Scottish Executive, to hold public consultations in respect of the planned improvements to the A9 north of Helmsdale.
John Thurso said:
"Following the meeting which Jamie Stone and I attended with Lewis Macdonald in Edinburgh early in the New Year, we were very pleased with the announcement made by the Minister on his subsequent visit to Thurso of extra funding for the A9. However, we also noted that the announcement made no mention of the major improvement work discussed at our meeting and we have, therefore, been pressing Lewis Macdonald hard to confirm the "valley floor" option."
The MP continued:
"Minor improvements to bends would not constitute an acceptable improvement, and I believe this is a view shared by the entire community. I therefore welcome the opportunity for different interest groups and the wider public to voice their opinions. The Minister states that a clear preferred option has not been identified. We have the opportunity to leave him in no doubt that residents of the Far North expect a substantial improvement to the road, and I therefore urge all in the area to make their views known at the appropriate time."
