Local MP John Thurso has received confirmation from Energy Minister, Brian Wilson, MP that there has been no cutback in the UKAEA's agreed decommissioning budget at Dounreay. The MP raised the matter with the DTI following expressions of concern by the Caithness Contractors' Consortium that companies were having to lay off staff due to constraints on the Authority's different budgets. Attached is a copy of the Minister's response.
John Thurso said:
"If the objective of creating a sound, knowledge-based and vibrant economy in the North is to be achieved, then it is important that locally-based enterprises capture as much decommissioning business as possible at all stages of the site restoration plan work.
Whilst it is for the UKAEA to prioritise and manage projects, Government, as the funder, has a critical role to play in ensuring that the budget available is clearly understood and flows in a steady manner.
I therefore welcome the offer by the Energy Minister to meet with locally-based businesses and to make clear the Government's commitment to its role in this process. I shall be seeking to set up the meeting at the earliest possible date."
