Local MP, John Thurso, has joined forces with his colleague, Alistair Carmichael, MP for Orkney and Shetland, to express their joint concern over recent press reports that a "ghost fleet" of some 90 redundant US Navy vessels is to be brought through the Pentland Firth. The two MPs have requested an urgent meeting with Shipping Minister, David Jamieson, MP.
John Thurso said:
"The "Escania" incident a few years ago demonstrated the extreme risk to the North Coast and Pentland Firth when ships get into trouble. It was as a result of that incident that we secured a tug in the Pentland Firth. However, one tug will not be sufficient to deal with a fleet of some 90 ships if there should be a serious problem. I shall therefore be presenting a very strong argument to the Minister that there be two further tugs stationed at Scrabster and Orkney for the period during which these vessels are passing through our waters."
