Local MP John Thurso has received an encouraging response from Frank McAveety, MSP, Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care at the Scottish Executive, confirming that the Scottish Executive will not necessarily be bound by the decision of the EAPC (the Ministerial Sub-Committee on Productivity and Competitiveness) if that decision should go against the Executive's own recommendation.
John Thurso said:
"This is a very encouraging development. Community pharmacies in rural areas now form a vital link in the health care chain. Ministers are on record within the Scottish Parliament as recognising this role, and the importance of retaining the rural network of community pharmacies.
The pressure for deregulation has been strongest in densely populated areas particularly in England. The demography of Scotland is very different, and we have different needs.
Whatever recommendation is made by the EAPC, it is reassuring to know that the Executive will decide the way forward in Scotland."
