Following publication today of the government white paper "The future of Higher Education," John Thurso MP, the Liberal Democrat Scotland spokesman, has warned that Labour's proposals could seriously jeopardise places at Scottish Universities for Scottish students.
"The proposal for an admissions regulator, and the requirement for English Universities to discriminate against students form middle class backgrounds, will inevitably lead to an increase in applications from English Students to our excellent Scottish Universities. Whilst Scottish Universities have a long tradition of welcoming students from other countries, these measures will produce a gross distortion as students with good grades, but denied a place in England, are forced to look elsewhere.
"My colleagues at Westminster will oppose vigorously these divisive and ill conceived proposals. I call on the Helen Liddel to stand up for Scotland's interests in the cabinet and to defend the Executive's far sited policy which abolished tuition fees in Scotland."
