Local MP John Thurso and MSP Jamie Stone are urging all who value the role which the local pharmacy plays in the life of the community to make their views known directly to the Scottish Executive. Their plea comes in the wake of an OFT (Office of Fair Trading) report which recommends the abolition of the current "control of entry regulations" which enable Health Boards to regulate the number and location of dispensing pharmacies in an area:
John Thurso MP said:
"This report poses a particular threat to areas such as ours. My fear is that if the Government were to accept the OFT recommendations the future of the small village community pharmacist would no longer be viable. The local pharmacy is not just the supplier of drugs: it is a vital link in the healthcare chain providing routine medical advice and effective patient care. Letters I have received from GPs in the constituency have praised the complementary role which the community pharmacist performs in their work".
Jamie Stone MSP said:
"I have this week met pharmacists at Dornoch, Golspie and Tain but pharmacies throughout the Far North are highlighting the dangers which this report represents. It is now apparent that the Scottish Executive has the opportunity to make its own recommendation to Government and it is therefore vital that people make their concerns about these proposals known to the Executive".
