Local MP John Thurso, speaking this afternoon on the occasion of the House of Commons debate on military action in Iraq, said:
"Saddam Hussein's regime is abhorrent. He must be disarmed in accordance with UN resolutions.
Since the inception of the current crisis, I have argued the importance of collective international action through the United Nations, with the use of military force only as a last resort.
No sane person wants war. It is a matter of intense regret that international diplomacy has failed. I do not believe that the case for war has yet been made or that the time required for the Inspectors to undertake their task has been exhausted. Therefore, tonight, I will vote against the Government.
It is, however, likely that the Government will carry their Motion and that within days British servicemen and women will be in action. At the outbreak of hostilities, I will support those servicemen and women who will be acting on the legitimate instructions of our democratic government.
However, I will continue to express my opposition to the political decision to commence action. I hope that my fears for the future are unfounded and I pray that any action will be short and quick with the minimum loss of life to soldiers and civilians".
