John Thurso, MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, has welcomed the announcement of the UK's first modern apprenticeship in nuclear operations and decommissioning as a step towards securing more local jobs around Dounreay.
Speaking from Westminster, John Thurso said:
"I welcome this pilot scheme and the setting up of modern apprenticeships in nuclear operations and decommissioning.
It is obvious that if the Far North is to retain the benefit of the decommissioning spend then we must develop a skills base which can be exported on the back of the lessons learned from Dounreay.
The North Highland College in Thurso has a long history of working constructively with UKAEA and I hope they will continue to develop courses so that they in turn may establish themselves as a centre of learning excellence in these new skills.
However it is essential that once they are trained we have good, firm jobs for these workers to go to. I shall be taking a delegation from the Caithness Contractors Consortium to meet the Energy Minister in order to ensure that as much as possible of the available work is captured by these highly skilled local companies, thereby maximising the economic impact to the local economy.
With nearly £150million per year at stake we will be looking for the Minister to assure us that local companies get a fair crack of the whip".
