Local MP John Thurso, commenting on the Chancellor's announcement on British entry into the single currency, said:
"I was pleasantly surprised by the tone of the Chancellor's statement. The Government has presented a very positive assessment of the benefits for Britain within the Euro and set out the means by which we can create the right economic conditions for UK entry. It has made clear its commitment to review these issues in next year's budget and to remove remaining obstacles. Above all, what Scottish business needs is some degree of stability.
I regret that it has taken so long to arrive at this stage. Delay has cost our farming, tourism, and manufacturing industries dear. We must not miss further opportunities for trade and investment or place at risk our influence on the key decisions to be taken in Europe in the coming years.
We are now firmly on course for a referendum and we have the opportunity to considerably boost trade with the euro-zone and improve long term incomes."
