Local MP John Thurso has warmly welcomed the decision of the Scottish Executive not to accept the OFT report, 'The Control of Entry Regulations and Retail Pharmacy Services in the UK'. The report recommended the abolition of the current "control of entry" regulations which enable Health Boards to regulate the number and location of dispensing pharmacies in an area.
John Thurso said:
"The pressure for deregulation has been strongest in densely populated areas particularly in England. The demography of Scotland is very different and we have different needs.
Community pharmacies in rural areas now form a vital link in the healthcare chain. This is a sensible decision which I am sure will be very warmly welcomed across the Far North.
Very many in the area have made their concerns known to me and I would like to thank all for their individual letters and petitions which I am in no doubt have helped influence the thinking of the Scottish Ministers".
