Local MP John Thurso has called for urgent action and financial aid to tackle the problem of Accelerated Low Water Corrosion at Helmsdale Harbour. Attached is a copy of his letter to Deputy Transport Minister at the Scottish Executive, Lewis Macdonald, MSP.
The MP said:
"Accelerated Low Water Corrosion is relatively new to Scotland but since its presence has now been identified at at least two Highland harbours (Scrabster and Helmsdale) it is likely that others will be at risk.
It is vital that the Executive has in place a national strategy to tackle the problem. Although small, many of our harbours can make a significant contribution to the local economy. However, neither Highland Harbours nor the communities which these harbours serve are in a position to meet the costs of necessary remedial work without external aid."
