Local MP John Thurso has been told that the Government has "made no prejudgements regarding the break-up and land storage" of redundant nuclear submarines. In a letter received from the Defence Procurement Minister, Lord Bach, the MP has been informed that the transparent and independent consultations set out in Project ISOLUS will be adhered to and that it could be up to three years before a preferred bidder emerges.
Commenting, John Thurso said:
"There has been considerable concern that the Government has a preordained solution for the decommissioning of nuclear submarines. The Minister has given me a firm written reassurance that the Government has made no prejudgements regarding the land storage work, which reinforces the assurance he gave me orally.
In addition, he has given a categoric undertaking that the rumours of plans to import Russian submarines into Caithness, or indeed anywhere else in the UK, are also totally unfounded. Again, I am pleased to have his assurance in this matter and note that contracts are already in place with the Russian shipyards that will carry out the work."
