Local MP John Thurso, commenting on the announcement today by Lord Bach, Minister for Defence Procurement, that consideration of 118 potential MOD coastal sites for the interim storage of intact nuclear reactor compartments as part of Project ISOLUS has identified only one site - Coulport in Dumbartonshire - as being suitable in principle, said:
"I welcome this announcement by Lord Bach as it will end the uncertainty which has been hanging over many other potential sites throughout the United Kingdom.
As I stated in my letter to the Minister of 1st December 2003 and in evidence I submitted to the consultation organised by Lancaster University, I believe that interim land storage is wrong in principle and that it would be preferable to continue sea storage of intact submarines until such time as a permanent solution has been agreed upon."
