Local MP John Thurso has this week called on Treasury Minister Dawn Primarolo, MP to intervene to prevent severe hardship and to take urgent action to address the problems facing thousands of people in receipt of tax credits.
John Thurso said:
"The new tax credits were introduced in April 2003 and chaos flowed almost immediately. This year, the chaos has not gone away and new problems are arising as the Inland Revenue tries to retrieve overpayments. The way these overpayments are occurring and the way they are being retrieved is having a very damaging impact on many families.
The Treasury has stated that where the Inland Revenue themselves were responsible for the mistake no repayment would be sought but proving the Inland Revenue were responsible is much easier said than done. Increasingly cases are coming to my attention of delays, poor case management and computer errors. This is causing immense worry and for the average man in the street appealing decisions made by the Inland Revenue can be a very distressing experience indeed".
