Alliance and Leicester job losses

June 17, 2004 12:00 AM

Local MP John Thurso, commenting on the announcement that Alliance and Leicester is to close its Wick Branch, said:

"Alliance and Leicester's announcement today that they are closing 46 branches is a consequence of the restructuring of the retail banking industry. I deeply regret, however, that they have chosen to close the Wick branch as I know how much the customers in Wick have valued the service, and any loss of jobs in Wick is bad news".

"However, following the campaign which I and my colleagues have been pursuing to press Banks to transfer their services to the Post Offices so customers may retain a personal service, I am pleased that Alliance and Leicester is one of the Banks that has taken this route. It will help to secure jobs at the Post Office.

The recent announcement of Highland Health to establish a Dental School in Wick, demonstrates that we can bring high quality jobs to Wick and should encourage us all to step up our effort."

If you are a resident of the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
