Commenting on the announcement today by the Secretary of State regarding DWP Processing Centres and its potential impact on the Wick Office, local MP John Thurso said:
"Ministers at DWP have either shown astonishing incompetence or blatant ignorance in respect of the potential of the Wick office. The Government's avowed policy is to place jobs in areas which need them yet in this case has chosen to ignore Wick with its excellent staff and potential for recruitment in favour of a centralising step which will simply make recruitment at the chosen sites more difficult.
The only ray of hope is that following a long conversation with Kevin Doran, Director of JobcentrePlus Scotland, he has informed me that he appreciates the situation in Wick and will continue his efforts to bring suitable other work to this office.
I shall be maintaining all possible pressure upon Ministers to secure a rethink".
