Local MP John Thurso has welcomed the announcement this week that Parcelforce is to create a new tariff whereby all parcels and goods travelling from one end of mainland Scotland to another will not incur the surcharges that exist under the current zones. However he believes the Company needs to move further and abandon the remaining surcharge on deliveries from England to the Highlands.
The MP said:
"This week's announcement is a welcome first response by Parcelforce to the concerns of those resident in the Far North about the surcharges which they have historically had to pay for the delivery of packages from all parts of the UK outwith the Highlands. However, it does not go far enough.
The Far North is already disadvantaged by its remoteness and it is quite wrong that households and businesses, many of them very small, should suffer further penalty due to their location. The Highlands need to be on par with the rest of Scotland so far as deliveries from England are concerned, and I shall continue to press Parcelforce to this end."
