Speaking ahead of the anticipated announcement on the outcome of the rail review, John Thurso, the Liberal Democrat Spokesman for Transport and Scotland said:
"The importance of this review cannot be understated. If it addresses the key issues and produces sensible solutions it will lay down foundations for the future of the railways. On the other hand, if it has ducked them it will simply be a recipe for continuing strife and a massive missed opportunity".
"It is critical that the Government accepts its responsibilities for strategic leadership. It is for the Transport Secretary and his department to offer the vision and leadership for the future of the railways, which effectively removes the need for the Strategic Rail Authority.
"This would also allow the SRA's powers in respect of Scotland to be devolved to the Scottish Parliament - a move I would welcome as a sensible extension of devolution and an opportunity for the particular needs of the Scottish network to be dealt with in Scotland by the Executive".
