Local MP, John Thurso, has criticised the Energy Review published this week:
"This energy review has proved to be a damp squib. The document published does not match the rhetoric which preceded it. There has been little advance since the last energy review, indeed, it is more a restatement of aspirations than a statement of real measures for achieving them.
"I welcome the aspirations. Energy conservation, investment in renewables, micro-generation, and a balanced approach to the provision of the baseload, are all entirely sensible. However we need to move towards securing the delivery of a secure supply of low carbon energy and that needs firm proposals which were conspicuously absent from Alistair Darling's statement."
Commenting on Alistair Darling's statement that new nuclear build "could" form part of the energy mix, John Thurso said:
"Alistair Darling's statement that nuclear energy could be part of our future energy mix but it must be funded by the private sector, is simply a restatement of the current position. It will neither satisfy those who believe it should be part of such a mix nor those who are opposed to it. It seems that when the Prime Minister said that new nuclear build was "back on the agenda with a vengeance" he failed to mention that it had barely crept on the bottom of "Any Other Business."
"However there is some good news for the Far North. The intention to reinforce the renewables obligation for emerging technology will undoubtedly help the exploitation of the tidal current in the Pentland Firth, and the recognition that a value must be placed on carbon through a new emissions trading scheme will also be helpful.
"Overall however, this looks like a wasted opportunity to achieve real progress."
