Local MP, John Thurso has given a warm welcome to the announcement this week by Liberal Democrat Transport Minister, Tavish Scott, MSP that air fares for those travelling from Wick Airport to Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen will be reduced by 40%.
The reduction is expected to take effect this summer following approval by the European Commission and will be available on both outward and return journeys.
John Thurso said:
"This is very good news for both holiday travellers as well as the local business community. It will for the first time deliver to those resident in the Far North the benefits of affordable air access that others in Scotland now take for granted.
"Air routes into Wick have been under pressure for some time. Excessive prices have impacted heavily on the number of those using the Airport. This is an innovative scheme which delivers support not to the airline operator but to the individual passenger. It is therefore very much a case of "use it or lose it". Increased numbers passing through Wick will not only greatly strengthen existing air routes but could offer the prospect of attracting new airlines and additional routes."
