Following proposals by OFCOM in their consultation document on introducing administered incentive pricing to revise the fees for using maritime and aeronautical radio spectrum, which could massively increase the cost to the RNLI and other charities involved in life saving and search and rescue, local MP John Thurso has signed a Commons motion calling on OFCOM to reject its current proposals and enter into a process to introduce a 100% discount for these vital life saving services.
John Thurso said:
"The RNLI is funded entirely by voluntary contributions and provides an absolutely crucial service. Government and Government bodies like OFCOM should be grateful for the services they provide rather than seeking to place additional financial burdens on them."
He went on to say
"I was glad to note that following intervention by myself and other colleagues on behalf of the RNLI and other charities, OFCOM have changed their website and now indicate they will offer a discount by allowing organisations that have a large number of transmitters around the country to take out a single UK-wide licence. However I believe that these charities should not be charged at all and my colleagues and I are putting in a joint submission to OFCOM making this point."
Early Day Motion 2274 on Spectrum Pricing to the Maritime and Aeronautical Sectors was tabled by John Thurso's colleague, Orkney and Shetland MP, Alistair Carmichael.
