Commenting on the Hooper review into modernising Royal Mail published today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Business Secretary, John Thurso said: "As this review makes clear, the status quo is not an option. Royal Mail must be restructured if it is ever to return to profit, as the Liberal Democrats called for two years ago."
"The announcement on pensions is welcome, as Royal Mail had no chance of modernising with the huge deficit hanging round its neck. However, we need to see details of exactly what the Government is planning.
"The Liberal Democrats strongly support the commitment to maintain the Universal Service Obligation. Any attempt to water it down would rightly hit strong opposition around the country.
"Sadly this statement does not make clear how these changes will safeguard the remaining Post Office branches that so many people depend upon."
