In Parliament today John Thurso put forward proposals intended to secure the future of our postal network and the Royal Mail's universal service obligation. Basing his proposals on the Hooper report he called for a more imaginative approach to unlocking capital, far greater worker participation so they could become real stakeholders in the company and to focus much more upon improving the way the company operates as opposed to simply attracting capital. John also made it clear that it was important when debating the future of the Royal Mail not to overlook what actions the Government could now take to guarantee the future of the post office network and stopping any further closures. In terms of the post office network he called for greater stakeholder control and further backed the idea of creating a post bank and providing more local services through the post office network.
John opposed the Government's plans for a part privatization of Royal Mail on the grounds that they would not address many of the fundamental problems outlined in the Hooper Report. He further opposed the Conservatives motion as being "a cast back to Thatcherism"
