Local MP John Thurso expressed his disappointment today at Government plans to increase tax on beer by 2%. John voted against Government plans in the Commons last week however the Liberal Democrat amendment to the Finance Bill opposing this was defeated in the House.
John argued that the increase would put more financial pressure on local pubs and landlords throughout the north who were already suffering in the recession. It would also penalize responsible drinkers without curbing problem drinkers.
The Campaign for Real Ale have estimated that 5 pubs are closing every day as a result of people drinking less in their local pubs, and the pressures of the economic slowdown. Opponents of the duty increases have also expressed concern over their impact on the competitiveness of the Scottish whiskey industry, which relies heavily on exports.
Commenting John said:
'In rural areas, the pub is often a vital part of the local community. The Government should be helping landlords, not punishing them with another unnecessary tax hike'
