MP seeks urgent meeting with Energy Minister on Pentland Firth

July 16, 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting today on the publication of the Government's White Paper "The UK Renewable Energy Strategy" John Thurso MP said:

"This is a step in the right direction and I therefore welcome the White Paper. However, the Government has clearly not yet grasped the true scale and potential of marine renewable energy in the Pentland Firth. Indeed, the Pentland Firth barely rates a mention. It is not only one of the largest potential resources of reliable renewable energy in the world but offers the possibility of establishing in the Far North the world centre for the industry.

"I have therefore arranged an urgent meeting with the Energy Minister, Lord Hunt, for tomorrow (16 July) to brief him on the potential of the industry, the support needed, and to ask him why the Government is ignoring this national asset.

"The UK needs the Pentland Firth resource. It should be front and centre of our national targets not left to the footnotes"

If you are a resident of the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
