John overlooking the Pentland Firth"Milestone" for the area reached as Crown Estate announces two marine wave energy seabed lease sites in the Far North - Thurso

Local MP and Lib Dem Business Spokesman John Thurso welcomed yesterday's announcement by the Crown Estate that two developers have been given the green light to install wave and tidal devices in two sites off the north Sutherland and Caithness coasts respectively.

This is the first wave of activity in a potential industry that Highland and Islands Enterprise expects to create between 500 and 1700 jobs in the Far North and in which the UK is a world leader.

Six developers in total were given the green light at ten different sites. In Caithness the developer is Scottish Power Renewables' and the site is off Duncansby Head, in north Sutherland the developer is Pelamis Wave Power Limited off Armadale.

John Thurso said:

"This is about turning what not so long ago was a dream into a reality. We must ensure there are real and lasting benefits for our economy and our communities. We have the opportunity to be the equivalent of Silicon Valley in marine energy."

If you are a resident of the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
