Local MP John Thurso has condemned the budget as a wasted opportunity for the nation and particularly disappointing for the north:
"This is a disappointing budget - particularly for the north. The chancellor has missed an opportunity to give the nation a clear and honest plan on spending and taxation and has instead produced a budget full of election gimmicks which will fool no one."
"The freeze in personal allowances means that everyone will have a tax rise with the heaviest burden falling on the lowest paid and pensioners. The increase in fuel duty at a time when costs are soaring is a cost to everyone who relies on a car as most do in the highlands. The failure to give firm instructions to the state owned banks to lend to business will damage enterprise."
"Yet the worst part of this budget is the complete lack of transparency over the plan to reduce the deficit and his reliance on over optimistic growth forecasts. This should have been a budget for the nation, a time for honesty and clarity. Instead it was a budget for an election full of smoke and mirrors - the last gasp of a dying government"
