Speaking at the Marine Hotel, Brora on Thursday, 8 April on the occasion of the adoption of John Thurso as Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, Lord Maclennan (the former MP for the constituency) said:
"I do not recall a more important General Election in the last thirty years. At home and abroad we face huge dangers to peace, security and economic well-being. Britain needs wise heads and steady hands to steer our course. It is not a time for divisive, strident, self-centred party politicking.
What we need after the Election is a Government which is able to draw upon the good sense and public spirited service of the people and the politicians who represent them. We will not flourish as we should if a party bound to sectional interests, elected only by a minority of those entitled to vote, claims absolute power. That is what has happened time and again under our present unreformed political system.
In the North Highlands we are fortunate to have parliamentary candidates of experience and judgment with a deep knowledge and real love of the areas they have represented in the House of Commons with effectiveness and distinction.
It is significant that John Thurso has attracted backing not only from across the length and breadth of the constituency but from all sectors of industry. Those urging him to stand again come from our traditional industries of farming, fishing and forestry, from the craft and tourist industries and small business. Backing comes from those spearheading new, innovative technology and those providing much needed public services. He has a record of speaking up for these interests, for the young, the old and the needy and has been highly successful in enhancing the awareness of the potential contribution of our community to national life.
John Thurso's voice has been heard and listened to with respect in the House of Commons and across the country whether as spokesman on Business or on the Treasury Select Committee. His issues are those which will most immediately face the new Government and whether he himself is in or out of government his voice will continue to be heard.
At this perilous time and as we try to recover the Liberal Democrats are dogmatic only on one principle: our policies are designed to be fair for all."
