Speaking today (15 April) following the launch of the Liberal Democrat Manifesto, John Thurso, Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate, said:
"We still live in an increasingly unfair society. Since Labour came to power, the divide between rich and poor has widened. Today, the top 20% pay less in tax than in 1997 whilst the least well off 20% have seen their tax burden rise.
"The Liberal Democrat manifesto launched yesterday has at its heart a simple principle: that all individuals are special and the job of government is to help allow each and everyone to exploit their potential. That straightforward principle of fairness is the foundation on which all our policies are built.
Fairness in Taxation - the Liberal Democrats will lift the point at which people pay tax to £10,000 a year. Low wage earners and many pensioners will be lifted altogether out of taxation making them better off by £700 a year.
Fairness for our Children - our pupil premium will give disadvantaged children the extra help they need in primary schools thus ensuring a fair start.
A Fair Economy - investing in new and green technologies we shall help business to create sustainable jobs.
Fair Politics - giving people a stronger say in local affairs and the right to recall corrupt MPs.
"These pledges of fairness will especially appeal to people in the Highlands - communities which live and work together. Community spirit is at the heart of Highland life. We all want to live in a fair and just society and the Liberal Democrat manifesto pledges will begin the process of delivering this opportunity for all."
