Local MP John Thurso has welcomed the choice of experienced Councillor Robbie Rowantree as the Highland Liberal Democrat candidate for the new Holyrood seat of Caithness, Sutherland and Ross. Sitting MSP Jamie Stone announced this summer that he will be standing down at the next election after more than 25 years public service as a Councillor and as an MSP since the creation of the Scottish Parliament.
Elected as Highland Liberal Democrat Councillor for North, West and Central Sutherland in 2007, Robbie served as Vice-Chair of Housing and Resources in the Lib Dem led Administration until the beginning of the year. He is passionate about tackling the Highlands' acute housing problem and the huge and growing problem of fuel poverty in our area. As Councillor for one of the most remote and rural areas in the country he knows how important it is that all our areas are treated fairly and that the north gets the investment and protections it needs.
John Thurso MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross said:
"Robbie and I have been friends since we were children and more recently friendly political opponents. I can think of few people able to argue as passionately and eloquently as Robbie for the needs of the North on issues as diverse as the problem of fuel poverty, to making sure communities have the power to shape their own future.
"Given the economic and political situation it is clear that this election and the opportunity to try and reform our broken voting system in a referendum is incredibly important for the North and Scotland as a whole. It is a chance to make sure fairness is at the very heart of the economy and to renew our faith in our political system by delivering fairer votes. I know Robbie has the liberal convictions and the passion for a fairer society to lead that campaign in what is going to be a hard fought campaign here in the North."
