Local MP John Thurso took the opportunity of a meeting of the Treasury Select Committee this week to grill the Governor of the Bank of England over his proposals to introduce checks on the sweeping new powers to be granted the Bank.
The Governor, Mervyn King, was appearing before a meeting of the influential Treasury Select Committee which is investigating proposals to make the UK Financial system more stable.
Speaking in the Committee John Thurso was concerned that the new oversight Committee would be "a committee to determine whether all the wrong decisions have been taken correctly". He suggested any oversight Committee should have a say on the decisions made by the Bank as well as on the process and governance behind it.
The Treasury Committee will be releasing a short report on this issue before the Chancellor publishes the final Financial Services Bill at the end of this month.
